The human eye is an optical system consisting the cornea and lens. They are capable of forming an image of any object on the surface of the eye, in an area called the retina, which is sensitive to light. The term myopia refers to the inability to see well far away. 50% of the information we receive from the environment comes through the grasp of the eyes.
This means that, because the eye is larger than normal, the image is projected in front of the retina and objects appear blurry. Currently many patients do not tolerate or do not want to use glasses or contact lenses. For this reason different surgical methods were developed that were initiated after radial keratotomy. For example, the Excimer Laser surgery can correct myopia of up to 12 diopters.
Lasik involves making a corneal flap with a specially designed instrument called a microkeratome. The procedure ends with the replacement of the flap. To correct myopias greater than 12 diopters, intraocular lenses are implanted.
