Members of the Academy's Ophthalmic Technology Assessment Committee reviewed the literature and conclude that phakic IOL (intra-ocular lens) implantation is a safe and effective treatment for myopia and astigmatism.
The treatment consists of replacing the eye's lens by a special lens similar to that used in cataract surgeries.
This is good news for patients with these diseases because they can access such strategies as alternatives to the use of external lenses (glasses).
